Google Ignores Meta Keywords (It Said So Itself)
A businesswoman asked me during a business coaching session if SEO keywords matter for getting more views. I told her no. It does not work that way.
What matters is the content people actually see. The video. The words on the page. The caption under the post. A hidden tag in your website code does not put your video in front of one extra person. That was my answer then, and Google's own documentation backs it up word for word.
What Google actually says
Google publishes developer documentation at developers.google.com. In it, the company states plainly: Google does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently sees no need to change that policy.
Read that again. The company that runs search told the world it does not look at the tag. Not a rumor. Not a theory from a marketing guru. Google's own engineers wrote it down.
Why the tag existed in the first place
Years ago, search engines did read meta keywords. Website owners listed the words they wanted to rank for, and search engines used those lists to understand the page. It lasted until people abused it. Site owners stuffed hundreds of keywords into the tag, including words that had nothing to do with the page, just to catch traffic. The tag became useless as a signal because nobody told the truth in it. Google stopped trusting it, then stopped reading it entirely. That was back in 2009.
Why business owners still obsess over it
When I told her keywords do not matter, she looked surprised. That reaction is common. Most business owners who ask about meta keywords are working from old information. Somebody told them years ago that keywords were the secret to ranking, and they never went back to check if it was still true. It becomes a habit. This is how we have always done it, so this is how we keep doing it.
There is a second reason, and it is simpler. They do not know what they do not know. I did not know Google had published this until I looked it up. Most owners running a business full time are not reading Google's developer docs at night. They hear "SEO" and assume there is a trick they are missing, when the truth is the trick stopped working over fifteen years ago.
What actually moves the needle
Here is what I told her in that session, and here is what I tell every owner who asks. The things that get you views are the things people consume. A video that holds attention. Words that speak to a real problem. A caption that makes someone stop scrolling. Search engines and social platforms measure what people do with your content, not what you typed into a hidden field. If people watch, read, click, and share, the platforms show it to more people. That is the whole game.
Filling out a keywords box feels productive. It is not. It is paperwork that nobody reads.
One warning about Bing
Google ignores the tag completely, which means it can neither help nor hurt you there. Bing is slightly different. Bing has said the tag carries almost no weight, but stuffing it full of keywords can count against you as a spam signal. So the one place the tag still does anything is as a way to get penalized. Leave it blank or leave it alone.
The bottom line
Your website has a keywords field. Google does not read it. It has not read it since 2009. It published that fact on its own developer site. The owners still filling it in are spending energy on something with zero return, usually because nobody told them the game changed.
I am telling you now. Put that energy into the content people actually see.
